In spite of the fact that we’ve heard the Indian government was readying a $10 laptop, they came out and announced a tablet, that will go for $35. The device is pictured below and it was unveiled by Human Resources Minister of the Union of India, Shri Kapil Sibal. The device comes with YouTube support and Internet browsing, among others.
The slate will be available in two versions and its specs list includes Wi-Fi, 2GB of storage, a touchscreen display, a USB port and 2W power draw. 8,500 colleges have already signed up to take up the slate as part of the initial rollout with educational content on board.
Students in India will be purchasing this unit next year and Indian authorities hope to sell it for $10 apiece, thanks to subsidies. Let’s see if the tablet leaves Asia and heads for Europe and the US. [Via]
