Samsung Galaxy Tab To Compete With Non-existent Tablets

Samsung Galaxy Tab GT-P1000 Virtual KeyboardSamsung’s upcoming Galaxy Tab has been exposed but now we have to analyze who it’s going to be competing with. The Galaxy Tab is a 7-inch tablet so it can’t really compete with the 9.7-inch Apple iPad, their not in the same size category. It’s not in the same tablet category as the infamous Notion Ink Adam tablet, which is set to come with a 10.1-inch screen.

There really isn’t any competition in the 7-inch tablet form-factor category. At least none that officially exist. So we can only speculate on just which 7-inch tablet can even compare to what the Galaxy Tab is set to offer. After minutes of serious pondering we remembered the iPad mini rumor from a few weeks ago. Remember the reported 7-inch Apple iPad Mini that is supposed to be in the works for a late 2010 or early 2011 release?

Apple iPad 7-inch TabletNow, the iPad Mini isn’t official but there is lots of evidence that Apple is placing orders for 7-inch IPS screens. The Chimmei Innolux company in Taiwan is one of the reported firms that has won a contract to supply Apple with 7-inch IPS display’s, Cando and Compal Electronics are others reported as being involved.

The 7-inch form-factor for a tablet will prove to be the most appealing to the public in the end due to size and price advantages over larger tablets. The smaller but not too small size of a 7-inch screen will make a tablet a more convenient product to carry. Most importantly the smaller screen will bring the costs down and everyone loves low prices.

We still have to see just how aggressively Samsung will price the Galaxy Tab or even if it will be offered on a subsidized plan with a telecom company. Those announcements should be coming in the next few days once Samsung’s CEO intro’s the Galaxy Tab at IFA 2010 Berlin

For me the question of how big a device I am willing to carry is still open. Right now, and for the next few days only, I still have a two year old LG Dare, but that is too small. The iPad is too big to carry all the time. I am not sure I would go as far as 7″, though I might well go to 5″ without too much trouble. Maybe the manufacturers are hunting around too, looking for the biggest device people will buy as a phone alternative instead of as a small laptop.

I think it’s safe to say that I would actually kill for the galaxy tab. I think they’ve really hit a much needed spot in terms of ultra portable tablets, where as the ipad can seem just that little bit too big, the Tab looks like a very comfortable size. That plus android and super amoled display will make it a true leader in the tablet Market.

    Bring it on samsung!
