Ahead of the launch of the new Apple iPad 2, Apple has made available the latest version of iOS named 4.3 for iPad and a few other iDevices. The new update is free for download right now if you currently own iPad 1 but if you are going to be getting iPad 2 tomorrow iOS 4.3 is what you will get out of the box.
In iOS 4.3 Apple iPad owners get a few very nice software features added to take advantage of existing hardware. Below are the added features and what they mean for your user experience.
Enhanced AirPlay support. With AirPlay in the past your wireless interaction has been limited to streaming only select things to Apple TV connected HDTV’s. The new and expanded Airplay now allows you the iPad owner to stream video from your Photos app and it allows you to stream other content from AirPlay-enabled apps and websites. Apple TV is a small $99 box that gives an HDTV access to select iOS applications for streaming HD media and more.
Faster Safari browser. The native web browser on all of Apple’s devices is Safari and for the latest iOS update Apple engineers have gone in and made necessary tweaks to make it run faster. The improvements will be felt on JavaScript heavy web pages thanks to the new Nitro JavaScript engine. JavaScript is a web language that is used by web developers in designing select features on web pages like image galleries.
iTunes Home Sharing now available. The addition of ‘iTunes Home Sharing’ to the latest version of iOS gives you the iPad owner the ability to wirelessly access and share media from your iTunes library around your home to other iDevices using your main PC and a shared Wi-Fi network. This feature will let you watch a movie that is stored on your iTunes library in your desktop upstairs on your iPad when you are down stairs in the living room.
iPad side switch button customization added. Apple has added into the new version of iOS the ability to designate your side switch on your iPad as a mute and un-mute switch or a screen rotation lock and unlock switch. This features and it’s benefits are pretty self evident, now you can with the flip of a switch lock screen rotation or mute audio on your iPad it’s up to you.
That concludes the new things but iOS had quite a bit of features beneficial to the iPad before iOS 4.3 thanks to previous updates. The iPad already offered Apple multi-tasking, AirPrint support, folders and much more you can see all the previous features in the graphic above this paragraph.
If you want to download iOS 4.3 now for your first generation iPad by just plugging the tablet into your computer and following the onscreen instructions in iTunes. But first you should make sure that you already have updated to the latest version of iTunes, iTunes 10.2.1.
