Beating or equalizing Apple in pricing is hot on the minds of tablet makers RIM and Samsung. Today the impending BlackBerry PlayBook, Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 and Galaxy Tab 10.1 each had their retail pricing announced. All three tablets featured prices that were right in line with the Apple iPad 2 or right below the iPad 2. Below you can see the Wi-Fi only pricing for all of these tablets including iPad 2 for comparison.
| Capacity | iPad 2 | PlayBook | Galaxy Tab 8.9 | Galaxy Tab 10.1 |
| 16GB | $499 | $499 | $469 | $499 |
| 32GB | $599 | $599 | $569 | $599 |
| 64GB | $699 | $699 | N/A | N/A |
The PlayBook mirrors the iPad 2 on all counts in this Wi-Fi only price comparison. As for Samsung’s offering the Tab 8.9 is the only model that beats the iPad 2 on pricing in the 16GB and 32GB categories in contends in, the Tab 10.1 mirrors the iPad 2 in it’s given capacities. It’s worth noting that each of the iPad competing tablets offer higher spec. cameras, SD card readers and USB ports.
It will be very interesting to see prices for the other upcoming models from other tablet makers like ASUS. Apple looks like it will be getting a run for it’s money from at least to big time players this year at the all-important $500 price point. We’ll see as the year goes on how well these prices help RIM or Samsung in their hopes for gains in tablet market share.
