BlackBerry Video Chat and Facebook Apps Coming For PlayBook Tablet; Update: BlackBerry Messenger Too

BlackBerry PlayBook video callResearch In Motion to kick-off BlackBerry World 2011 has announced two new applications that are coming very soon to the company’s new 7-inch BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. The first application to arrive will be a dedicated BlackBerry video calling/chatting application and the second application will be a custom Facebook application.

According to Electronista RIM will be launching the video calling application for the PlayBook on May 3rd, 2011 and the Facebook application will be coming later in May 2011.

The video calling application will be allow PlayBook users to chat with other folks who are listed in their BlackBerry ID contacts folder (note the usual BlackBerry contacts won’t be included). Included with the video calling application other than the obvious ability to initiate and receive video calls, is the ability to set your device to “do not disturb” in the event you are pre-occupied and don’t want to be interrupted by calls. –the PlayBook has two cameras a 3MP front and 5MP rear.

As for the Facebook application it will feature a custom design that best suits the PlayBook and its 7-inch WSVGA (1024×600) resolution. Also the application will allow users to playback up to Full HD Facebook videos over HDMI if they wish.

These new additions are sure to please many PlayBook owners and hopefully the trend of new applications speeds up for the PlayBook as time goes on.

Update: The good news keeps rolling for the PlayBook, Business Insider reports that RIM has begun offering the famed BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) with PlayBook compatibility. To get BBM on your PlayBook you will need a BlackBerry phone and BlackBerry Bridge 1.0.0.83 along with a download of BBM 6.0 from Blackberry Beta Zone (free to sign-up and download).
