Seagate GoFlex SatelliteSeagate has done it, they have created the first portable hard drive solution that can stream any file to the Apple iPad. The Seagate GoFlex Satellite is a first of its kind portable hard drive that has Wi-Fi streaming support for documents, photos, music and videos  as well as a built-in rechargeable battery for completely wireless use.

In their official press announcement Seagate states the following about device compatibility ‘GoFlex Satellite wirelessly streams content to an iPad®, iPod touch™, iPhone® or other Wi-Fi enabled devices’.

This product is nice but not perfect for all consumers, it works great on the Apple iPad 1 or 2 along with other iOS products but the GoFlex Satellite doesn’t work the same with Android devices.

For Android devices users will have to get access to files using their web browsers for access to Seagate’s GoFlex Satellite service. According to Engadget who has been able to get a pre-release review of the product the browser method for Android devices works well for photos and videos but streaming videos was not very good.

If you are using the iPad or another iOS device you will have a custom designed application titled GoFlex Media App  where you get to get access to files on your wireless drive in a well-arranged fashion (see image below).

Seagate GoFlex Media AppThe Seagate GoFlex Satellite does it’s streaming over Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n connections. When you buy a GoFlex Satellite you get a 500GB hard drive and a re-chargeable battery that lasts up to 5 hours on a full-charge– according to Seagate. For getting files on the drive Seagate will include a USB 3.0 cable, the drive is USB 3.0 compatible, that is backwards compatible with USB 2.0 ports. This new wireless storage solution will become available for buyers next month with a retail price of $199.99, not too bad if you want this for your iPad.
