Amazon Launching Dual-Core and Quad-Core Tablet This Year, Rumor Has It

Amazon tablet mock-up not realAmazon the most popular online retailer is entering the tablet market, according to reports/rumors, with not just one tablet but multiple. A new report indicates Amazon will be launching two tablets this year that will run most likely on the Google Android platform. The new report/rumor comes from the tech journalists at Boy Genius Report (BGR) who cite a confidential insider tip as a source.

One of the two tablets code-named “Coyote” will feature a dual-core processor at its heart from the NVIDIA Tegra 250 platform. That means the “Coyote” will have the same 1GHz dual-core ARM Cortex A9 based SoC found in the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer, Acer ICONIA Tab A500, LG G-Slate and Motorola XOOM Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablets, all four of which have been launched to a certain degree.

Now the other tablet code-named “Hollywood”¬†will feature a yet to be released quad-core processor at its center from the NVIDIA Tegra T30 platform. The Tegra 3 is supposed to deliver performance gains over Tegra 2 of an NVIDIA estimated 500% (as outlandish as it sounds). NVIDIA has only demonstrated some capabilities of the Tegra 3 SoC that has been given the nickname Kal-El (birth name of fictional super-hero Superman).

NVIDIA Tegra performance progression chartBefore getting too excited about these reports you should keep in mind that this is all hearsay that has not been substantiated by any hard evidence (photos or videos). Things are going to be getting more interesting though as we move more into the Summer months, whatever Amazon might have planned should start to come to light around then.

I’m waiting for the quad-core chips to hit tablets especially since I can’t really find an Asus Transformer. I just hope that one of the quad-cores that show up first is either the Transformer or very similar tablet/netbook hybrid.
