AMD Unveils Their First Tablet-friendly Processing Chip, It’s A Fusion APU

AMD Smart Choice logoAt this years Computex trade show all the big players in the chip business are there and showing off new products for all sorts of form-factors including tablets. One chip player to show off a new chip for tablets was Advanced Micro Devices (AMD). The dual-core 1 GHz AMD Z-01 Desna APU (Accelerated Processing Unit) low-power chip is the new tablet-friendly processing unit announced by AMD for x86 based tablets.

The new 40nm (process) chip offers up dual Bobcat x86 processing cores and an integrated AMD Radeon HD 6250 discrete-class DirectX 11 GPU. AMD quotes TDP for the Z-01 as being 5.9W, making it one of the lest power-hungry x86 processing chips around. The AMD Z-01 will be but a beginning to a new range of Z-series Desna Fusion APUs that AMD will build-up in future, so you x86 tablet fans do have more to look forward too.

AMD Z-series Desna APU infoAt this time AMD is reporting that Micro-Star International (MSI) will be an early adopter of the Z-01 APU. The MSI WindPad 110W a 10.1-inch Windows 7 tablet PC will be the host for the dual-core AMD Z-01 APU. Other features included with the 110W include an SSD, DDR3 system RAM and ports like HDMI and USB 2.0 built-in. MSI hasn’t priced the Desna based WindPad 110W yet but the E-350 Zacate based version is expected to launch sometime this month for $599, pre-order the Zacate WindPad 110W now.

MSI WindPad 110W frontOther x86 tablet makers haven’t stepped up yet but it’s only a matter of time, the 5.9W TDP is a tempting feature for power conscience x86 tablets. AMD states that the production for the Z-01 APU is ready and going and chips are ready now for shipment to OEM’s.
