Apple iPad 2 White TabletIn the third quarter of 2011 Apple sold 9.25 million iPad tablets, that’s up from the weaker quarter two figure of 4.69 million iPads sold. However in the third quarter the iPad 2 sales finally came all the way into play. In the third quarter Apple once again upped revenue and profits from the previous quarter, this time the Cupertino company posted $28.57 billion in revenue and $7.31 billion in profit.

What’s next for Apple? Well in the tablet space the company has been rumored to be testing out some new high-resolution displays for the iPad 3, but that’s only a rumor. What certain though is the launch of iOS 5 soon, Apple will launch the new version this fall at WWDC 2011. From the details provided by Apple the new update will offer a lot of new and revamped features that bring the iPad closer and closer to perfection.

In iOS 5 the iPad will benefit from new Wi-Fi syncing capabilities (no more plugging into a PC), tabbed web browsing in Safari with new reader functionality that will enhance the web experience for reading articles, and there is a new notification system as well that streamlines the entire process of seeing and managing notifications. Apple is expected to release iOS 5 for the iPad and other iOS devices later this month.

You can check out the official Apple press release for the Q3 earnings report here. Soon Apple Chiefs Steve Jobs and Tim Cook are expected to talk with investors and take lights questions, if anything interesting happens I’ll update you.

Update: Steve didn’t come onto the earnings call but Tim Cook and other company officials did speak on the iPad and other Apple matters. Here are the main points for the iPad:

  • Apple is still selling every iPad they can build.
  • The iPad is available now in 64 different countries, 36 total new countries were added during the third quarter.
  • Revenue from iPad sales hit $6 billion in the third quarter which is a sharp increase from the $2.2 billion the iPad represented last quarter.
  • Enterprise is showing love for the iPad by adopting it into business or giving the tablets a test. In the third quarter 47 percent of Global 500 and 86 percent of Fortune 500 companies were either testing or deploying iPad tablets.
  • Tim Cook said that he believes that the iPad played a roll in Mac sales decline, people were choosing the $500+ iPad over a Mac. However Cook did also state that iPad adoption over a PC is hurting the Windows PC market more.
