The Strategy Analytics Tablet & Touchscreen (TTS) service is reporting that Apple Inc. accounted for 80% of the tablet market in Q2 2011 for the North American region. According to Strategy Analytics Apple’s chief competitors Motorola, Samsung, RIM, Asus and HTC individually made very little impact going against the iPad.
Previously Apple reported that they sold 4.69 million iPads during the second quarter of 2011. According to the analysis published today by Strategy Analytics TTS for the second quarter there were 7.5 million tablets shipped in North America that quarter.
To explain why Apple was so popular in the Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics, Alex Spektor, said, ”A combination of cool branding, user-friendly hardware, entertaining services and savvy retail distribution has made Apple a formidable market leader.” To their credit Apple has created some very informative and attention-getting advertisements for their iPad tablets, also positive press from mainstream media outlets hasn’t hurt the iPad either.
Going forward it’s still difficult for me to see any other single tablet coming along to have an impact that the Apple iPad has. Sure as time goes and more tablets enter the market the operating system market share should start to swing away from Apple’s iOS and towards Google’s Android, but I doubt any one Android tablet will ever come along and create the frenzy that the iPad has been able to create.
