Apple Inc. has long been rumored to have a 7-inch tablet in development, the loudest rumors came in early 2010 for the California-based company before they unveiled the first iPad.

The first rumors in 2010 were based mostly around scoops claimed by industry analysts. After unveiling the 9.7-inch first generation Apple iPad in March of 2010 analysts and all other rumor-mill contributors claimed the smaller iPad would be the next tablet Apple released next. When 2011 rolled around Apple revealed the next iPad with the new iPad 2 in March and it featured the same 9.7-inch screen size that the first iPad offered. Now for 2012 the rumor mill is calling for the release of the smaller iPad, again.

According to Chinese news outlet UDN Apple has taken delivery on sample small LCD panels from LG Display and AU Optronics (both are known display suppliers for Apple). Apparently Apple’s smaller iPad will go the way of the 9.7-inch iPad and adopt an unconventional screen size with 7.85-inches if UDN is to be believed. The UDN goes on to predict the 7.85-inch iPad would be released in 2012, unsurprisingly.

Why is Apple exploring the option of offering a small iPad tablet for 2012? Well UDN believes it has something to do with the 7-inch Amazon Kindle Fire tablet that’s still yet to be released into the market. However last night during an earnings call with investors after reporting Apple’s Q4 fiscal 2011 earnings Apple CEO, Tim Cook, revealed that he was unfazed by the $200 Kindle Fire tablet as a challenger for his companies 9.7-inch iPad.

“We’ve seen several competitors come to market to try to compete with the iPad,” Tim Cook explained. “Some had different form factors, different price points. And I think it’s reasonable to say that none of these have gained any traction thus far. And in fact, as all of those competitors were coming to market, our share actually went up, such that in the June quarter, according to IDC, we were responsible for three out of every four tablets sold.”

Apple just reported their iPad sales for the fourth quarter were 11.12 million units, which is far ahead of what any other competitor has been able to muster in the sales department for the entire year of 2011.

I’ll believe that Apple has a 7-inch sized tablet in their product pipeline when they reveal as much at one of their keynote events in California.
