Toshiba Thrive Google Android Honeycomb TabletEarlier this year if you wanted to get yourself an Android Honeycomb tablet you had to get together at least $700 if you wanted the off-contract Motorola XOOM 3G tablet. However now we’re almost done with 2011 and there are significantly more Android Honeycomb based tablets available on the market at varying price points.

At retailer Best Buy, for instance, you can take your pick from a host of Android Honeycomb based tablets that range in price from $299.99 all the way up to $658.99. The $299.99 price is something new and it probably won’t last long. Best Buy has a special going right now that provides tablet shoppers the opportunity to purchase the 10.1″ Toshiba Thrive 8GB Wi-Fi only tablet for just $299.99 instead of the usual $379.99, a savings of $80 with no strings attached (other than you can only buy the tablet in-store at Best Buy).

The 10.1″ Toshiba Thrive was initially released in early July of this year and it represented the first Android Honeycomb tablet that the world would see from the Toshiba company. Only yesterday did Toshiba add a new Android Honeycomb tablet that off-sets the 10.1″ Thrive, the smaller 7″ Toshiba Thrive which starts at $379.99.

As their first Android Honeycomb tablet the 10.1″ Thrive was a decent effort from Toshiba. The 10.1″ Thrive was the first tablet to provide users with full-sized ports for USB 2.0, HDMI, and SD memory cards. Also the 10.1″ Toshiba Thrive remains the one and only tablet on the market with a swappable battery (removable), as far as Android tablets go.

In other areas the 10.1″ Toshiba Thrive hit all the necessary marks for a high-end Android tablet back in July. The 10.1″ Thrive like the other Honeycomb tablets unveiled at that time came equipped with a 1 GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core processing chip, 1GB of RAM, and a WXGA (1280-by-800) resolution capacitive touchscreen. Other technical highlights for the 10.1″ Thrive included dual cameras (5.0 MP rear camera with AutoFocus, 2.0MP front webcam), microSD card support, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 3.0+HS, up to 10 hours of battery life estimated, 1.6 lb. weight, and 0.6-inches thickness.

With its features and the Android 3.1 Honeycomb software that comes pre-installed with the tablet reviewers have found the  10.1″ Toshiba Thrive to be a satisfactory tablet. The only major critiques many have wagered concern the tablets overall size in comparison to tablets like the Apple iPad 2 or Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, the 10.1″ Thrive is heavier and thicker than those other slim tablets and that hurts the tablets portable appeal.

However for $299.99 you can’t do better than the 10.1″ Toshiba Thrive at this point and time.
