RIM BlackBerry PlayBook black backgroundResearch In Motion might have found the perfect price point for their 7-inch BlackBerry PlayBook tablet for India. Early reports claim that RIM’s PlayBook tablet has been sold over 12,000 times over the past four days across India leaving a few retailers totally drained of any stock.

RIM recently passed along the discount love to India after the company had offered major discounts to both Canada and the U.S. ahead of the Christmas shopping season. For India prices were chopped down to 13,490 INR (~$250USD) for the base 16GB Wi-Fi PlayBook tablet, a comparison between on sale pricing and standard pricing can be seen below.

  • 16 GB model: $250 (13,490 INR) against usual price of $528 (27,990 INR)
  • 32 GB model: $300 (15,990 INR) against usual price of $622 (32,990 INR)
  • 64 GB model: $462 (24,490 INR) against usual price of $717 (37,990 INR)

For the U.S. prices for the BlackBerry PlayBook were as low as $199.99 for a 16GB Wi-Fi model just last month.

The discounted prices have given RIM such favorable results that the company is extending their sale through next week, previously the sale was scheduled to end at the end of December 2011.

RIM struggled most of 2011 to sell their 7-inch PlayBook to consumers. Despite having a unique operating system and hardware that was very competitive the PlayBook never excelled in the way that RIM might have hoped. RIM closed 2011 with reports that unsold PlayBook tablets cost the company as much as $485 million in Q3 2011.

RIM’s BlackBerry PlayBook launched in mid-2011 with the following technical specifications:

  • 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB built-in storage
  • 1GB RAM
  • 1GHZ dual-core TI OMAP 4 series processor
