The prices are too high! For on-contract 4G LTE tablets that is. Carriers have seen a very soft response to 4G tablets on their networks due mostly to the prices the tablets are being sold at with data contracts. Consumers aren’t willing to spend $500+ on a tablet which requires them to sign a two-year data contract. AT&T has realized as much and they have worked with Pantech to develop a $300 4G LTE tablet for on-contract customers.
Although Pantech hasn’t been one of the big names in tablets of late their still a reputable company as far as mobile electronics are concerned, and they are best known for offering affordable electronics that are of good quality. The 8-inch Pantech Element is the companies first LTE tablet and it’s going to be released on AT&T’s network later this month for $299.99 plus a two-year contract.
The Pantech Element will boast a XGA (1024×768) resolution touchscreen LCD, a 1.5 GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processing chip, Android 3.2 Honeycomb, 1GB of RAM, 16GB built-in storage, USB, HDMI, memory card reader, a 2MP webcam and a 5MP rear camera with 720p HD video capture capabilities, waterproofing throughout, and the tablet also includes a large capacity battery (6,400 mAh) which is estimated to offer up to 12 hours of intensive use battery life. The tablet also includes Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technologies as well as 4G LTE mobile broadband.
Pantech’s tablet is rated officially as being IP57 for waterproofing which basically means it can withstand some water from rain or a spilled cup comfortably, but don’t take the tablet scuba diving with you in the ocean if you plan on going beyond 1 foot down because the tablet will stop functioning.
AT&T will start selling the Pantech Element tablet on January 22, 2012.
