Is Samsung planning to undercut Apple on price with the Galaxy Tab 2 (10.1) tablet?

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 front angleSamsung is Apple’s most vocal competitor and in the tablet world the Galaxy Tab series was the first to really challenge the Apple iPad tablets. In the near future Samsung is planning to release a new, next generation Galaxy Tab 10.1-inch tablet. The new tablet is named Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (10.1) and it was revealed to the world back at this years Mobile World Congress trade show along with the 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0).

The new Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (10.1) boasted the same display resolution as the outgoing Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, 1280×800 pixels, however the tablet featured an all new design and a new 1.5GHz Samsung-made dual-core processor. With its WXGA display resolution the new Galaxy Tab 2 (10.1) tablet doesn’t challenge the new iPad, but it does out-do the now old iPad 2 tablet.

An attractive price is revealed

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 office depotSamsung never got around to revealing a price tag for the Galaxy Tab 2 (10.1) during the Mobile World Congress 2012 trade show, but the maker might be ready to announce a price tag. Major electronics retailer Office Depot has started listing the new Galaxy Tab on their online store with a $399 price for a model equipped with 8GB of storage and Wi-Fi only for Internet access.

Office Depot like many retailers been very quick to adopt tablets into their product range. In fact at Office Depot stores you should find a dedicated space for tablets.

Prices are falling, just as expected

The price you have to pay for a decent tablet has fallen greatly since the market was revived in 2010 with the iPad 1′s release. You can get 7-inch or even 10.1-inch tablets with decent features for $300 or less, and the tablets are from makers you know (e.g. Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Acer, RIM, Lenovo etc.).

Market prices were destined to fall once more and more manufacturers started to push out tablet devices. To get their units to sell individual manufacturers had to start chasing lower price points for their models. Challenging the $500 iPad with a $500 (or sometimes more) tablet has yet to work out very well for any manufacturer.

With their new Galaxy Tab 2 (10.1) tablet Samsung could be planning to create a high-end $400 tablet. Thus far Samsung has shipped mainly high-end tablets but failed to gain any serious market share. It will be interesting to see how consumers respond to a $400 10.1-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab that features many of things the iPad.
