Not to be forgotten in the wake of Surface and the Nexus 7 Archos has unveiled another new Android tablet. The new model has been dubbed Archos 97 Carbon and it’s been made even more important than your usual Archos tablet because it’s the launch model for a new line of Archos tablets called Elements series.

In the company’s announcement founder and CEO Henry Crohas said the new Element series will offer consumers “the perfect balance of hardware, software optimization and content through the Google Play ecosystem”. The later part of Mr.Crohas’ statement should mean a lot to early Archos Android tablet fans who bought devices that didn’t have Google’s application store for Android pre-installed, Crohas is pretty much guaranteeing that every Element series tablet will have Google Play access out of the box.

Archos 97 Carbon features

As mentioned the Archos 97 Carbon is the launch Element series tablet, and as such all of its features have been listed on the tablets Archos.com webpage. The 97 Carbon’s main features include a 9.7-inch capacitive 5-point multi-touch IPS display with a 1024 x 768 native resolution, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS, a 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor, Wi-Fi n, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of built-in storage and a microSD card slot for up to 32GB storage expansion.

Battery life estimates provided by Archos indicate the new Archos 97 Carbon will be capable of up to 8 hours of video playback and up to 20 hours of music playback. In the fine-print Archos explains their battery life estimates for the 97 Carbon come from tests where display brightness is purposely set on low for added power conservation.

Archos 97 Carbon design

With the 97 Carbon tablet Archos has introduced a brand new design scheme yet again to their tablet line-up. This time around the shell/back-plate for the 97 Carbon is done in brushed aluminum for a sturdy and premium feel. The chosen color resembles a Brown Red blend. The chassis of the Archos 97 Carbon measures 11.5mm thick and the tablet weighs 620g.  Despite its slim design the 97 Carbon chassis manages to include ports for mico HDMI, micro USB 2.0, and full-size USB 2.0 as well as a microSD slot.

Availability and price

At this time Archos has announced the new 97 Carbon tablet will retail for $229.99  and $249.99 when it’s launched this month. Retail options should include mostly online merchants such as Amazon.com and Newegg.com on the third-party level, but Archos should sell the new 97 Carbon through their own online store.

If the 9.7-inch size tablet just isn’t what you need the Element series will gain 7- and 8-inch models at a later date, according to Archos. Prices for those smaller models should be in-line with the sub-$300 price tag the Archos 97 Carbon was presented with today.
